You are fine sitting up, but try to lay down and, no way! The monster rears its ugly head, making it impossible for you to sleep. Your ribs hurt and your sciatica is acting up. You feel like you have been hit by a truck. So what can you do to get some relief? First, be sure to drink plenty of water, as water will help to dilute the mucous. Include electrolyte beverages like lemonade and coconut water to help keep you hydrated (avoid the big box electrolyte drinks with added colors and flavors). Aromatherapy, homeopathy, and honey can help. Aromatherapy – An aromatherapy chest rub can relieve the cough and help you breathe. The most commonly used commercial vapor rubs contain some ingredients that are toxic, such as turpentine, which is toxic to young children in as little as 3 tsp, and petrolatum, a product of crude oil that coats the skin like plastic wrap and in turn blocks the skin’s natural function of releasing toxins from the body. Homeopathy – (like cures like) Available in pellets and liquid to help wake up the immune system to self-heal. Homeopathy has been around for hundreds of years. This system is still used today by the English Royal Family. Who doesn’t want to feel like a queen? Honey – Honey, especially Manuka with UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) can be used (12 months or older*) to help alleviate a cough. The honey will soothe and coat the throat. Using a UMF quality manuka honey is even

Let’s Talk About Breast Health and “Save The Girls”

Let’s Talk About Breast Health and “Save The Girls”   Don’t you think positive words are better for wellness? I do. Our thoughts and even the vibration of spoken words all create energy. So let’s talk positively about breast health.  What can we do for breast health?  1) Avoid Underwire Bras – Inhibiting lymphatic drainage, bras can trap toxins in the breast tissue, which may lead to cancer.  2) NEVER carry a cell phone in your bra. Is there a link between cell phone placement and breast cancer? Cellphones are two-way microwave radios and should not be kept directly on the body. The soft fatty tissue of the breast readily absorbs this radiation. Case Reports are accumulating of young women with no family history developing breast cancer. The tumors were unusually located directly underneath the skin where they placed their cell phones in their bra. Doctors voice this precautionary advice: Women should not store their cell phones in their bra. 3) Keep active with walking, gentle yoga or meditation. Try some gentle movement once a week. Buddy up and grab a friend to join you.  4) Incorporate more unrefined nut and seed foods like hemp, buckwheat, quinoa, walnuts, almonds, pecans, pumpkin and sunflower seeds into your lifestyle. Add fruits with seeds like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi, tomatoes and cucumbers. Even these herbal seeds can be used to spice up your food – cumin, coriander, caraway, anise, and dill seeds. 5) Hold the gluten! Replace all refined carbohydrates including white rice and white/unbleached flour products such as pasta, bread, cookies, crackers, pretzels, bagels, donuts, and cakes – with gluten free options. 6) Eat less vegetable oil. What is vegetable oil anyway? The FDA’s definition of vegetable oil includes canola and corn. Gee, last time I checked corn is a grain and not a vegetable. “Diets high in corn oil leave animals especially vulnerable to chemically induced cancers” say researchers. (Science News, 6/24/89; 10/2/99) Frightening as this statement is, it

The bio-hazards of the vitamin industry Vitamins are food, or they should be anyway. But, beware of all those really “affordable” brands you find in the big box store, pharmacy, and on-line. Why? Well, they are not all created equal. Did you know that most of the inexpensive brands are made from synthetic ingredients with vitamin compounds, and not the whole vitamin? Why do you think they are so affordable? Chemical by-products and industrial waste are environmentally hazardous and in abundant supply. This makes them both difficult, and costly to dispose of properly. Selling these waste products as cheap, raw materials is a huge win for manufacturers, and repackaging them as health supplements can be very profitable. Synthetic vitamins are made from isolated nutrients derived from natural sources like soy, lanolin, sago palm, sugar beets, corn starch, rice starch, bacterial fermentation or yeast (e.g., vitamin C is made from sugar beet or corn derivative). The manufacturing process uses chemicals, solvents and heat to distill or reduce down these nutrients into one specific isolated chemical structure that is called a “pure” vitamin. This means that children’s vitamins are loaded with synthetic ingredients and don’t do a growing body any good. Remember this important rule “nothing good is cheap and nothing cheap is good.” Don’t pay with your health! At Act Natural Health & Wellness we carry high-quality, organic supplements with food-grade sources, and a proven supply chain. Focus on improving the quality of your food instead of focusing on taking supplements to try to counterbalance a deficient diet. Stop eating C.R.A.P. (Commercially Reproduced Artificial Products). All those germs and bacteria in confined classrooms may just have something to do with it. How can all kids, big and small, boost the immune system? Here’s how! 1. Support a healthy gut with the foods you choose to eat. Remember, 70% of your immune system resides in your gut. If you are eating sugar and simple carbohydrates you are creating an acid gut environment that weakens the immune system. Did you know that eating sugar can paralyze your immune system for up to 5 hours? Yes, 5 hours! That leaves you without protection should you come into contact with a virus or bacteria left on a shopping cart, door handle or anything airborne. You can cover that cough and snuffle out that sneeze, but those little buggers can live for a long time on any surface they wind up on. 2. Consider avoiding anti-bacterial hand soap and hand sanitizers, because it isn’t only the bad guys that are killed off. No way, they all bite the dust, good and bad bacteria together. Bacteria have their own eco-system, with thousands of types. If we disrupt the eco-system, we gain new resistant bacteria. The good guys have the ability to transform into hostile bacteria over time. Did you know that e-coli used to be friendly? In order to survive, it mutated into a bad guy. You can’t fool Mother Nature!! 3. You want to be sure to create meals and snacks that support your immune system. Think about eating for the season. The foods grown during a season help support the body and the immune system. Think about cabbage, sweet potatoes, kale, almonds, spinach, oats, mushrooms, garlic, and the mineral rich herbal

She was having a response to her sugar addiction, and was talking to me from the cafeteria like a drug addict looking for her next fix. She needed my help in finding something healthy to grab. You would think there would be at least one healthy snack there, it’s a hospital after all, it’s where all the sick people go to regain health. She thought about a banana. Really? It will give you an insulin spike leaving you hungry and craving more sugar. How about a snack bar? Loaded with added forms of sugar from corn. She read the ingredients to three snack bars and not one was fit for human consumption-that is, if you are trying to avoid artificial flavors, added sugar, man made sugar, GMO ingredients, soy, soy by products, gluten, and fillers. How about a cup of tea? Yes! It will help with dehydration and help to satisfy the sugar craving. Let’s read the ingredients on the package of that lemon ginger tea. It’s just tea. No it isn’t! Black tea, soy lecithin, and natural flavors. What the heck is soy doing in a tea bag? Where do those natural flavors come from? The FDA does not regulate natural flavors, they are made in labs by chemical companies. My wise friend decided to grab the bag of trail mix and container of water she brought to work. Good idea! Do you think grabbing a sugary snack is the answer to hunger? Think again, because dehydration can trigger the hunger feeling.

Over the years I have discovered how to “bee” healthy all season long with a tablespoon of sweet prevention everyday….raw manuka honey. Although honey is enjoying a growing reputation in medical circles, in current times it is still considered an ‘alternative remedy. But for thousands of years it has actually been used as a ‘conventional’ choice. The Greeks, Egyptians, and other cultures made use of honey as a medicine throughout history. It is one of the oldest known medicines and has continued being used up to present times. Famous ancient physicians who used honey include Aristotle (384-322 BC), who mentions pale honey “good as a salve for sore eyes and wounds”, and Dioscorides (c.50 AD) who mentions it for ulcers. The healing properties of honey are even mentioned in many religious texts, including the Bible, Veda, and Koran. Now in recent years, modern science has started to confirm honey’s place in healing, and explain how it works through the chemical makeup of honey. This has also led to proper clinical studies of some types of honey, and in particular New Zealand’s active manuka honey.  What is Manuka Honey and why is it different? Manuka Honey is a very potent type of honey (healing honey) found in New Zealand that has been approved by the FDA, in 2007, for use as a medical treatment in wound and burn care. Several hospitals in the U.S. use Manuka Honey as part ot their healing protocol. It is one of the native trees of New Zealand. The manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) is the New Zealand version of the tea tree plant. It can be found growing wild in much of the country, but more predominately around coastal areas, with the east cape area of the north island having one of the larger concentrations. How is Manuka different from other
